Calvin Ulrich

I terraform landscapes into new unexplored places that reflect the mutable reality of identity and our relationship to place. I utilize physical and digital collage as forms of sketching to explore these merging worlds, and then re-investigate the work through my paintings. Commonly within environmental discourse there is an inherent desire for a passive nature that exists in stasis. This is contrary to the resistance to containment that is ever present within the natural world, as evidenced through invasive species, plant and animal migrations, natural disasters, and Lazarus taxon. To contradict and oppose this containment, within my work trees become an inhabitant of the landscape with individual life and agency, waterfalls dissipate into chromatic clouds, acting as smoke signals for an environment under stress, and elephants become a destructive force that challenge hierarchies of power. The goal of my artistic research and practice is to reanalyze and propose new contemporary painting and drawing methods that are engaged in landscape and nature genre art.
